Old Montreal, or Vieux-Montréal, is the charming and historical district where the city of Montreal was born. In May 1642, French settlers founded Ville-Marie (the city’s original name) on a piece of land near the St. Lawrence River, now part of Old Montreal. Layers of the centuries of history can be seen in Old Montreal, from its 17th-century beginnings to its modern-day restoration.

Ramble along the cobblestone streets or take a horse-drawn carriage (calèche) to best enjoy your surroundings. Visit art galleries, museums, and fashion-forward clothing shops.  You will notice that many historical Old Montreal homes have been turned into hotels and restaurants, and factories have been converted into hip apartment buildings. The concentration of 17th-, 18th- and 19th- century buildings is the highest in the entire country.

Join locals as they spend hours chatting over a coffee in the quaint cafés and restaurants. There are countless cozy world-class restaurants in the area featuring every food type (including French restaurants) for sampling mouth-watering local flavors.
